Back up all your Google AI Studio chats
Your AI Studio conversations live in one place: your Google account. A chat you cared about can disappear if it is deleted by mistake, if autosave was off when you had it, or if you lose access to the account. A backup you keep yourself, in a format you can read, removes that risk. This guide covers exporting your whole library at once, and having it done for you on a schedule.
Whole-library export and scheduled backups are part of the one-time Pro licence. Exporting a single conversation is free.
#Export your whole library once
- Install AI Studio Exporter and activate Pro in its settings.
- Open any page on aistudio.google.com while signed in.
- Click the extension's icon and choose Export entire library.
The extension reads your list of conversations, exports each one in the format you picked, and downloads the result.
#What you download
For formats that make one document per conversation (Markdown, plain text, JSON, HTML, PDF, Word and Obsidian) you get a ZIP like this:
ai-studio-library-2026-07-31T06-40-38.zip
├── index.md
├── manifest.json
├── how-does-the-rpc-auth-work/
│ ├── conversation.md
│ └── attachments/
│ └── screenshot.png
└── another-conversation/
└── conversation.md
index.mdis a readable list of every conversation, with a link to each, its date and its message count.manifest.jsonholds the same information for scripts, including anything that failed.- One folder per conversation, named from its title, with its attachments beside it.
CSV and JSONL are different: they produce one combined file for the whole library, not a ZIP, because they are built for analysis, not reading. What you download covers every layout.
#Large libraries
If a library is very large, it is split into several archives, each kept under about 256 MB before compression. Every part's index.md lists the whole library and says which part holds each conversation, so nothing looks missing. Extract the parts into the same folder and they merge. Chrome may ask once whether to allow multiple downloads.
#If something fails
One unreadable conversation does not lose the rest. The export carries on, lists the failures at the end and records each one with its id, title and error in manifest.json. It only stops if every conversation failed.
#Back up automatically
A scheduled backup repeats the export so you do not have to remember.
- Open the extension's settings and find Scheduled backup.
- Switch on Back up my library automatically.
- Choose a Frequency: daily, weekly or monthly.
- Choose a Format.
- Use Run now to try it once and watch the result.
#How it works
- Incremental. AI Studio reports when each conversation last changed, so a backup fetches only the conversations that changed since the last run. A weekly backup of a library of a few hundred chats is normally a handful of requests, not hundreds.
- In the background. The backup runs in an AI Studio tab that the extension opens without taking focus, and closes when it finishes. There is no overlay and nothing to click.
- Chrome has to be running. A backup is due on a timer, and Chrome must be open when one is due.
- You have to be signed in. The backup uses your existing Google session. If you are signed out, it cannot start.
#Knowing it worked
An unattended backup would be useless if you could not tell whether it ran. The extension's toolbar icon shows the result: a green tick for a complete backup, an amber mark when it finished but not completely, and a red X when it did not run or did not finish. Amber and red stay until you open the popup, which explains why. The badge guide lists every state.
#Where the files go
Backups are downloaded like any other export, into your browser's downloads folder. If you want them somewhere specific, such as a cloud-synced folder, set Chrome's download location accordingly. They are ordinary files: nothing is uploaded anywhere by the extension.
#Questions
#Is the backup private?
Yes. The conversations are read and written by the extension inside your browser, using your own session. There is no server of ours in the path, no analytics and no account. See the privacy page.
#Does it back up conversations deleted from AI Studio?
It saves what exists when it runs. A conversation you backed up earlier stays in your archive if you later delete it from AI Studio, but a conversation deleted before the first backup is gone.
#Can I choose Obsidian or PDF as the backup format?
Yes. Any of the per-conversation formats, or CSV and JSONL. For a vault, see the Obsidian guide.
#What does it cost?
Whole-library export and scheduled backups are part of Pro, a single payment with no subscription. The code is open source.
