AI Studio Exporter

Export a Google AI Studio chat to Markdown

Markdown is the best format to keep an AI Studio conversation in. It is plain text, so it opens in anything, it works with search and with version control, and it still renders properly in the tools that understand it, including GitHub, Obsidian, VS Code and most note apps. It is also free in AI Studio Exporter.

#How to do it

  1. Install AI Studio Exporter from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open the conversation on aistudio.google.com.
  3. Click the extension's icon in your toolbar.
  4. Leave the format on Markdown (it is the default) and click Export this conversation.

You get a file named after the conversation with the export time on the end, for example How does the RPC auth work - 2026-07-31T06-40-38.md. If the conversation had attachments, you get a ZIP instead, holding conversation.md and an attachments/ folder. Extract the ZIP before opening the file, so its links to the attachments can find them.

#What the file looks like

Each message gets a heading, a line with its time and token count, and the text exactly as AI Studio produced it:

<!-- aise:turn role=user -->
## User

_2025-06-15 12:20:00 UTC ยท 18 tokens_

How does the RPC auth work?

<!-- aise:turn role=model thought=1 -->
## Model (Reasoning)

...

Three details are worth knowing:

  • Message text is not altered. What AI Studio returns is already Markdown, so the exporter writes it verbatim instead of escaping it. Code blocks, tables and lists survive intact.
  • Each turn starts with an invisible marker. The <!-- aise:turn ... --> comment renders as nothing, but it lets a script find where one message ends and the next begins, even when a message itself contains a line that says ## User.
  • Reasoning is its own section, labelled Model (Reasoning), so you can read the answers without the thinking, or search for either.

Attachments appear as links, and images are embedded:

#What it keeps, and what you can leave out

By default the file includes the model name and its settings (temperature, top-P, top-K, output limit), the system instruction, per-message timestamps and token counts, and a link back to the conversation. Each of these has its own switch in the extension's settings, so you can keep a clean transcript and nothing else. Excluded attachments are counted rather than silently dropped: a message says, for example, 2 attachments not included in export. The settings reference lists every switch.

AI Studio stores each attachment as its own message, so a question you sent with three screenshots is four messages in its raw data. The exporter folds them back into the message you actually sent, which you can turn off if you want the raw structure.

#Why Markdown and not something else

  • It opens everywhere. Any text editor reads it, and the formatting is visible even without a renderer.
  • It diffs cleanly. If you keep exports in a git repository, changes between two exports show as line changes.
  • It is easy to convert. Tools such as Pandoc turn Markdown into PDF, Word or HTML if you need those later. If you want the extension to do that directly, see the PDF and Word guide.
  • It suits note apps. For Obsidian specifically there is a Pro format with frontmatter and wikilinks, covered in the Obsidian guide. Plain Markdown also imports into most others.

#Exporting many chats

The free version exports one conversation at a time. To export every conversation as Markdown in one archive, with an index, use the Pro whole-library export. See back up all your AI Studio chats.

#Questions

#Is Markdown export really free?

Yes. Markdown, JSON and plain text are free for any conversation, attachments included. The paid tier is for the other six formats, whole-library export and scheduled backups, and everything in it is open source.

#Why did I get a ZIP and not a .md file?

Because the conversation has attachments. The ZIP keeps the document and its files together so the links work. A conversation with no attachments downloads as a single .md file.

#Can I get the reasoning left out?

Yes. Turn off the reasoning setting and those turns are removed from the file entirely.

#Can I use the Markdown with other tools?

Yes. The turn markers make it easy to parse, and for machine use the JSON format has every field documented.
